The Disappearing Act

Living in London, you start to meet many characters. Some more fleshed out than others. My first year, fresh off the boat from California, I met this artist we will call Lana.

Like many others, Lana had a hard time finding a flat. She could not find a place whose interior design felt inspiring, so naturally she contemplated trying out homelessness to get in touch with the underground goth community. Meanwhile, she was a moody, rich Chinese girl from Shanghai who would roll up in her Margiela Tabi boots, Rimowa suitcase, and a Vivienne Westwood ring on every finger.

Well, that is not the secret, just a bit of backstory to our spirited Lana.

One day she was in the art studio. Not often did she converse, but that day she was feeling particularly chatty. She began to retell a story about a relationship she had the year before. We will call him Daniel, a performance artist.

They dated for a little more than half a year. They formed a friend group of like minded people who enjoyed edgy activities like smoking cigarettes, wearing black, listening to hard techno at squats, and watching alternative performances. Eventually, the relationship ran its course and Lana and Daniel broke things off mutually.

A month later, Daniel completely disappeared. His apartment was left untouched. His passport, bank accounts, and phone were all frozen in time. There was no suicide note and no body.

He was declared missing and presumed dead.

The friends quickly turned on Lana, telling her it was her fault and that it must have been because of the breakup. She was not invited to the funeral. The uncertainty tormented Lana, and she went through a dark period mourning the loss. There were simply too many loose ends.

She turned to psychic readings and mediums. She tried many, yet none of them said they could locate his soul. That left her wondering if he truly was dead or if this was all just a performance.

No one can be certain, so I will leave it to God and my Coquetas to come up with their own conclusions.

Lana has thankfully moved on from that dark period and healed from the experience. She moved back to China and is now a successful artist.
