A new discovery I recently made at an antique store is uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass. It has that green yellow glow reminiscent of the glow in the dark star stickers we all had on our ceilings as kids. It looks radioactive because it basically is. The glass contains uranium, which causes its eerie fluorescence under blacklight. It became popular during the Victorian era and through the 1920s, until production was halted during the war when uranium was needed for the atomic bomb. Despite its radioactive ingredient, it is safe to handle but not recommended for eating or drinking. Then again, with all the microplastics and the radiation from my computer on my lap, who really cares.
Would you drink from a radioactive glass?
One day, when I have a stable life as a real adult, I will collect uranium glass. Not to eat or drink from, but simply to be enthralled by its glow on a shelf. I try not to accumulate clutter that does not serve a purpose in my life. You would think that is very responsible, yet somehow I can justify a new pair of boots every week. Well, I do walk everywhere every day.
