I know this looks weird, but the job market is bad right now, and I’m willing to try anything for a bit of luck, even if that means groping a grave. Thank God bronze is antibacterial.
The Parisian tradition takes place at Père-Lachaise Cemetery, at the grave of Victor Noir, a 19th-century French journalist who was shot and killed by Prince Pierre Bonaparte. There is a lot more to his story, but the relevant part for today is this: tradition says that placing a flower in his hat, kissing his lips, and rubbing his crotch brings good luck and fertility.
Would you desecrate a grave for good luck?
Despite Oscar Wilde’s grave also being in this cemetery, everyone is crowding around Victor Noir’s grave to try their luck. It sounds like a controversial tradition, and yes, it has been, but not in the way you would think. In 2004, they built a fence around the grave in an attempt to stop the ritual. But the French did what the French do best and protested for the right to keep this good luck folklore alive.
So next time you win in Paris, instead of the Tour Eiffel, try Victor Noir’s grave.
