I recently discovered men’s fashion magazines. I know that sounds ridiculous, but in my defense, I am selfishly more interested in what the coquetas are wearing than what the coquetos are. But oh, how much I have missed.
My gay fantasies have come true with Arena Homme + and Vogue Hommes International, especially the issues from 2000 to 2004. Flipping through them, I found myself with one question: What type of man actually had a subscription to these magazines?
A well dressed man, of course. A heterosexual man? I’m less certain. A metrosexual, for sure. Fabulous gay guys, obviously. And if it were a straight man, I’d imagine someone like an early Cristiano Ronaldo or Mario Balotelli type. All of the above, rich of course.
The deeper I got into these magazines, the more complicated the question became. Who exactly were they made for? Some spreads are almost Playboy esque, nearly pornographic at times, with naked women in Versace heels straddling oiled up men in Speedos poolside, with genitals and designer details filling the pages.
Who was I supposed to focus on, the girls, the boys, or both? My eyes crossed.
And yet, as a coqueta, my real arousal wasn’t in the nudity. It was in the exquisite styling. The clothes, the accessories, the now vintage designer pieces, the fantasy of the whole thing. I wasn’t necessarily looking at the men or the women so much as I was looking at the world they were selling me.
And oh, I’m buying into it.
So naturally, Coquetas has made a curated selection of some of our favorite pages from these delicious magazines, pulled from the Acne Studios library in collaboration with the archive book account Book Babies, run by some fellow coquetas/os.
Book Babies started as a way for three photo book nerds to catalog all their most favourite finds! We wanted to create a research space for book collectors and cyberbibliophiles to engage with images and publication design. Bringing forward the work of established and emerging artists through collection and publishing. We hope to grow the community and head into the ever-so-overdone third space realm so people can share all their favourites right back to us in person.
